In the original version of Forbidden Magic, Jake and Silver had dated before the place where the story started. But it definitely hadn’t been meant to be. The mention of their brief attempt was deleted in the final manuscript.

Jake and Silver tried dating a few times but every date ended with disastrous results. On the first date he’d taken her out for sushi and she’d had a violent allergic reaction to the salmon. All those red spots—and his suit jacket never recovered from her—ah—ridding herself of the toxin. It was thanks to Cassia’s healing remedies that Silver didn’t end up even sicker than before.

Then there was the second date. Silver went with Jake to a policeman’s ball and he stepped on her hem and tore the skirt from her ball gown. Considering she didn’t wear underwear, that had been a little embarrassing. Thank the goddess the dance floor had been crowded enough that not too many people saw her naked butt before she managed to get her skirt from her ankles and hold it up around her waist.

Poor Jake. He’d been so embarrassed at causing the incident to happen. Despite the fact she’d been the one with the naked ass, she’d had a hard time keeping from grinning at the cute, boyish look on his face.

And then there was the third date where Jake’s broken ankle, thirty stings, and her black eye made it clear they were not meant for one another. She did tell him not to try to climb that trellis to get her a rose. He just wouldn't believe her about the hornet's nest.
